As part of the observance of National Disaster Resilience Month 2026, the UPSE-PCED Gender and Development (GAD) Committee successfully conducted the seminar “Shake, Rattle, and Gender Roles: Power and Resilience in Times of Disaster,” featuring Dr. Jake Rom Cadag as the resource speaker. The program opened with welcome remarks from Associate Professor Adrian Mendoza, who highlighted the importance of strengthening disaster resilience through inclusive, gender-responsive, and community-centered approaches.
In his lecture, Dr. Cadag explored the relationship between gender and disaster risk reduction and management (DRRM), emphasizing how gender roles and social dynamics shape people’s experiences before, during, and after disasters. He also discussed the vital role of community participation in disaster preparedness, response, recovery, and long-term resilience, stressing that inclusive strategies are essential to ensuring that no one is left behind.
The seminar provided participants with practical insights into integrating gender perspectives into disaster policies, institutional programs, and community-based initiatives. The engaging discussions encouraged participants to reflect on how gender-responsive governance can help build stronger, safer, and more resilient communities in the face of increasing disaster risks.
Organized by the UPSE-PCED Gender and Development (GAD) Committee, the activity reaffirmed UPSE-PCED’s commitment to advancing gender equality and promoting inclusive practices across its programs and initiatives. By creating opportunities for meaningful dialogue and knowledge sharing, the seminar contributed to strengthening institutional and community resilience while reinforcing the value of gender-responsive approaches to disaster risk reduction.
