“The answer to major socio-economic challenge didn’t reside just in economics, but governance and corruption had something to do with it.” Dr. Daniel Kaufmann started the seminar by sharing this insight from more than four decades ago, during his early work on poverty and development.
The UP School of Economics (UPSE) and the Philippine Center for Economic Development (PCED)’s Friday Seminar Series 2023 culminated on the 1st day of December 2023 with Dr. Kaufmann’s seminar entitled, “New Frontiers in Governance: State Capture and Corruption Worldwide and Implications for Asia”.
In his presentation, Dr. Kaufmann shared the results of his research on governance and corruption around the world, including Asia and the Philippines. He also highlighted his ongoing work on “State Capture” through the State Capture Index. The afternoon seminar, held in UPSE’s Elizabeth Yu Gokongwei Lecture Room, was jam-packed with students, faculty members, economists, and other members of the academe, business and research organizations.
Mr. Roby Alampay, the founder and chairman of Pumapodcast, served as host; while Professor Emeritus and NAST Scientist Raul Fabella and Ms. Heidi Mendoza, Dean of the College Management and Accountancy of Phinma Rizal College of Laguna, were the discussants.
